Story
Hi there,
You may know that every year I partake in International Vegetarian Week at the beginning of October, cutting out all meat (sometimes even ditching the leather handbags, boots, jackets, what have you!) in support of my good friend and colleague Teneale.
I am quite often around people who don’t eat meat nowadays – people I spend a lot of time with – in particular Teneale, my flatmates Hellene and Nudzejma and friend Maia. Through these lovely ladies I have learned that food can still be delicious and nutritious without being based around meat and I enjoy meat free meals more regularly nowadays.
Recently, Nudzejma has also been educating me about the truths of livestock harvesting and the lack of animal welfare in the industry. And just last week I was introduced to a fundraising and awareness initiative pioneered by my colleague who became a vegetarian last year after having his eyes opened to such truths.
My colleague has put an amazing amount of work into the “Meat Minimiser” – a website advocating for the ethical treatment of animals and educating on why cutting down on consumption of meat is also good for our health and the health of the planet we inhabit.
I guess this was the clincher. I’ve had people reach out to make me aware of certain realities and ask for help. And here’s my plug (or pledge, if you will).
In support of my dear friends and colleague I am taking part in No Meat May. 31 days of vegetarian lush life. It’s hardly the most noble thing in the world I could do but raising awareness of the issues and not eating meat for a month is something small I can do that can make a great deal of difference.
